An air source heat pump is a highly efficient heating and cooling system that extracts heat from the outside air, even in the coldest of winter months. This innovative technology makes it a sustainable and cost-effective solution for homes and businesses. Unlike traditional heating systems that burn fossil fuels, air source heat pumps harness the natural heat energy present in the atmosphere. This not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also significantly lowers energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

How does an air source heat pump work?

An air source heat pump operates on a simple principle: it uses a refrigerant to absorb heat from the ambient air and use it to heat up a home’s heating system. Here’s a breakdown of the process:

The heat pump’s refrigerant absorbs the heat from the outside air, even during colder temperatures.

The heated refrigerant is then compressed, increasing its temperature.

The refrigerant transfers its heat to a heat exchanger, which heats up the water used inside the property.

The refrigerant cools down and passes through an expansion valve to revert to its original state, and the cycle begins again.

In warmer months, the process can be reversed to cool your home by extracting heat from inside and releasing it outdoors.

Next, determine the optimal location for the manifold, this acts as the central hub of your underfloor heating system. It should be easily accessible and situated in a central area, allowing for efficient distribution of pipework throughout the property.

The Finishing Touches

Once your design is finalised, you will need to calculate the ideal flow rate for each loop of your system. This can be calculated by dividing the length of pipe by 40. You will also need to calculate the volume of water needed within each zone of your system.

When determining the volume of water needed for a 60m zone with a 12mm pipe, remember to account for the pipe thickness. Subtracting 4mm from the diameter will give you an 8mm internal diameter, resulting in a volume of 4.8 litres (0.08 x 60).

How Does Underfloor Heating Work?

There are two primary types of underfloor heating:

1. Electric Underfloor Heating: This system involves installing electric cables beneath your flooring. When activated, these cables generate heat, warming the floor surface. Electric underfloor heating systems come in two main types: electric underfloor heating mats and loose cable. Electric underfloor heating mats are prefabricated mats containing heating cables laid out in a serpentine pattern. They are easy to install and can be a good option for smaller areas or DIY projects. Loose cables offer more flexibility and customisation, allowing for installation in awkward shaped rooms.

2. Water-Based Underfloor Heating: This system utilises a network of pipes installed beneath the flooring. Hot water is circulated through these pipes, transferring heat to the floor. Water-based underfloor heating is commonly preferred in larger homes. Water-based underfloor heating comes with a variety of different systems depending on the situation. These include screeded systems for new builds, suspended systems for renovations with joisted floors, and low-profile systems for retrofits where floor height is a concern.

Enhanced Comfort: Underfloor heating provides a consistent and even heat distribution throughout your home, creating a more comfortable living environment. Unlike traditional radiators, which can cause hot and cold spots, underfloor heating ensures a warm and snug atmosphere in every room.

Energy Efficiency: Underfloor heating systems are often more energy-efficient than radiators. This is because heat rises naturally, meaning that warm air tends to accumulate near the ceiling in homes heated by radiators. Underfloor heating, on the other hand, heats the floor directly, ensuring that heat is distributed evenly throughout the space. Additionally, wet underfloor heating systems typically operate at lower temperatures than traditional radiators, meaning less energy is needed to heat the water. This can result in significant energy savings over time.

This makes them a healthier option for individuals with allergies or respiratory issues, as compared to radiators, which can stir up dust particles.

Increased Property Value: Installing underfloor heating can significantly enhance the value of your home. Potential buyers often view underfloor heating as a desirable feature, as it provides a luxurious and comfortable living experience.

Installation Considerations

The installation process for wet underfloor heating can vary depending on the type of system you choose and the existing flooring in your home. In general, the installation involves laying a layer of insulation over the subfloor, followed by the pipes. Then a thin layer of screed is then poured over the top to create a level surface for your final floor finish. For electric underfloor heating system, a thin cement board is installed on the sub-floor and the mat or loose cable is installed on top of the cement board. Depending on the system, a thin layer of screed is install, then the final floor finish.

Floor Finish: The choice of flooring can sometimes influence the type of underfloor heating system that can be installed. For instance, if you prefer carpet flooring and are considering electric underfloor heating, you might be limited to using an FME mat or a 160W mat with a 10mm layer of self-levelling screed on top.

Existing Heating System: If you have an existing central heating system, water-based underfloor heating can often be integrated more seamlessly. However, electric underfloor heating remains a viable option, particularly for renovating smaller rooms like bathrooms, conservatories, or kitchens.

Budget: The initial cost of installation and ongoing operational expenses should be factored into your decision. While underfloor heating may have a higher upfront cost compared to traditional heating systems, it can often result in long-term energy savings.

1 – Supplying inaccurate Floor Plans and Drawings

When embarking on an underfloor heating project, comprehensive architectural floor plans aren’t always a necessity. However, precision in the provided measurements is crucial. Without these accurate measurements, the exact design and subsequent installation can’t be executed correctly. Mistakes in these measurements can result in incorrect material quantities and compromised system plans, potentially leading to cold spots within the heated area. Rectifying these issues later on can be both time-consuming and costly. To avoid such complications, it’s vital to double-check the accuracy of all drawings before submission.

2 – Overlooking the Damp-Proof Membrane

During underfloor heating installation, a common oversight is neglecting the importance of a damp-proof membrane (DPM). If the DPM is not installed between the insulation and the underfloor heating, it sets off an unfortunate sequence of events involving the screed and insulation. Specifically, the screed reacts with the aluminium foil on top of the insulation, causing corrosion. This reaction results in gas bubbles that manifest as air pockets within the screed. Instead of effectively conducting heat, the screed transforms into an insulator. This significantly reduces the efficiency of the underfloor heating system, as the heat gets trapped within the screed rather than warming the room above. It’s important to note that the Snug Castellation Mat system integrates the DPM directly into the mat, eliminating the need for a separate damp-proof membrane.

3 – Deviating from the Supplied Design Plan

Ensuring an efficient and effective underfloor heating system involves sticking to the unique design plans. These plans are meticulously calculated to ensure the most efficient system for that project. When these plans aren’t followed precisely, various issues can arise. There’s a risk of loss of project materials prematurely, resulting in added expenses during the later stages of the installation. This not only increases costs but can also lead to project delays and complications. At Snug, our expert Water team calculates individual flow rates and materials required to precise specifications for each project, guaranteeing the most even distribution of heat.

It’s crucial to conduct the pressure test with water, not air, as air is compressible and makes it challenging to identify leaks. We strongly recommend a pressure test at 6 bar before laying the screed and 3 bar thereafter until the system is ready for commissioning. This step helps identify and address any installation-related leaks and prevents future screed cracking.

5 – Incorrect Temperature Sensor Usage

A common but often overlooked error in underfloor heating projects involves using the wrong temperature sensor on the thermostat. This is particularly critical in bathroom installations, where the thermostat is often located outside the bathroom. To ensure precise temperature control, it’s essential to use a floor probe sensor that is installed into the floor and detects the bathroom floor’s temperature. Relying on the thermostat’s air sensor, which measures the temperature outside the room, can lead to inconsistent heating. Using a floor probe sensor ensures that the warmth is regulated where it’s needed most, creating a comfortable and cosy bathroom environment.

Myth 1: Underfloor Heating wastes energy compared to traditional systems

One misconception about underfloor heating is that it consumes excessive energy compared to traditional heating systems. However, this is far from the truth. Wet underfloor heating uses lower temperatures and covers more floor space, ensuring more even and efficient heating. What’s more, it can be powered by alternative energy sources like air source heat pumps or solar power, reducing energy consumption. With the aid of smart thermostats and sensors, underfloor heating can automatically adjust the temperature to match the homeowner’s preferences, making it a comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally friendly choice for heating your home.

Myth 3: Only small number of floor types can handle underfloor heating

Underfloor heating is highly adaptable to various flooring types. While materials like tile and stone naturally distribute heat effectively, it can also work with laminate, wood, vinyl, and even carpet. Snug offers solutions for floating floors, such as the Snug Mat FMEs, with the super-thin foil design, which is perfect for carpet or click-lock laminates. For tile, stone, and marble floors, Snug Mats and water systems are excellent choices. The key is selecting the right underfloor heating system and insulation that suits your specific flooring choice, ensuring that you can enjoy a warm and cosy home regardless of the floor type.

Myth 4: Underfloor heating can only be installed in new builds

While it’s simpler to integrate underfloor heating into new constructions, retrofitting this modern heating solution in existing homes is entirely feasible. Snug offers various retrofit solutions, such as the low-profile overlay system made from 18mm thick recycled gypsum boards that can be directly tiled on top of, minimising floor build-up. If you have joisted floors, the suspended heat plate system can be installed beneath floorboards, keeping the impact on floor thickness to a minimum. Additionally, if you’re renovating a room below the area where you want underfloor heating installed, our fit-from-below system is the perfect solution, ensuring a smooth and effective upgrade to any renovation.

Reducing the Temperature

One of the most effective ways to save energy with underfloor heating is to set the heat source at a lower temperature. Since underfloor heating provides a more even distribution of heat over a larger surface area compared to traditional radiators, you can easily reduce the temperature without compromising your comfort. Just a few degrees can make a significant difference in your energy consumption and utility bills. Furthermore, research has shown that underfloor heating’s exceptional ability to warm your feet can have a ripple effect, warming your entire body and contributing to a heightened sense of comfort and well-being.

Using a Smart Thermostat

Upgrade your underfloor heating system to a smart thermostat, such as one of our SnugStats, for precise temperature control. Our SnugStat thermostats offer innovative features to maximize energy efficiency. The self-learning function allows the thermostat to learn how long a room takes to reach the desired temperature, and only turns on at this point, ensuring it’s perfectly heated when you need it (and not before), ultimately saving you energy. The SnugStat Wi-Fi thermostat comes with geo-location functionality that syncs with your smartphone. Once programmed, the temperature reduces as you get further away from your home, and then as you get closer, it remotely turns the heating back to the desired temperature, so you can enjoy a warm and welcoming home while saving money.

Insulate, Insulate, Insulate

Proper insulation, including products like SuperFoil, is key to maximizing the efficiency of your underfloor heating system. Ensuring that your home is well-insulated, not only minimises the load on your heating but helps to prevent heat from escaping down into the subfloor, pushing it upwards into the room so that you maximise the output of heating into where you need it the most!

Replace your Heating Source

A more significant yet highly effective measure, is to consider replacing your heat source to a more renewable option like a heat pump such as our Snug Air Source Heat Pumps. They are a highly efficient and are the perfect complement to your underfloor heating, providing sustainable warmth for your home. This is due to the fact that heat pumps produce a lower temperature heat output, and as underfloor heating heats the entire floor space, it can be run at a lower temperature, making them an ideal low-cost and low-energy heating combination. While this is an upfront investment, it can result in substantial energy savings over a longer-term period.

We are proud to announce that three of our adventurous colleagues, James Hague, Rob Matthews, and Steve Dunne, are gearing up to take on the formidable 3 Peaks Challenge.

This exciting endeavor will see them conquer the highest peaks in England, Scotland, and Wales within 24 hours, all in support of a charitable cause.

James, Rob, and Steve will commence their epic journey on the 17th of June, aiming to complete the challenge by the 18th of June. The trio has set their sights on a grueling mission to climb the three highest mountains in the UK—Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales.

The 3 Peaks Challenge is no small feat, requiring immense physical and mental endurance. Scaling these peaks involves covering a staggering distance of over 23 miles and ascending a total height of more than 10,000 feet. The team is prepared to face varying terrains, unpredictable weather conditions, and demanding time constraints. Training and preparation are already underway, as they diligently work on improving their fitness levels and honing their mountaineering skills.

In addition to providing efficient and comfortable heating, underfloor heating can also increase the value of your property.
Wet Underfloor Heating

Wet underfloor heating uses a series of pipes that are laid beneath the floor and filled with warm water. The water is heated by a boiler or heat pump and circulated through the pipes to provide a consistent and even heat distribution throughout the room. It is more efficient than traditional radiators, as it operates at a lower temperature, which results in less energy to heat the same area. While wet underfloor heating can be more expensive to install than electric underfloor heating, it is a longer-term investment that can add value to your property and reduce your energy bills over time.

Electric underfloor heating is a popular choice for those looking to retrofit their heating system, as it’s great for smaller spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms, and easy to install with a range of floor finishes. The system consists of a series of electric heating mats or cables that are connected to a thermostat. Though slightly more expensive to run than wet underfloor heating due to electricity usage, it’s still a popular choice for its ease of installation and suitability for smaller spaces.

Snug Heat Pumps – The Benefits

Sustainably Energy Efficient

Secondly and importantly heat pumps are highly energy efficient. Unlike traditional heating systems that rely on burning fossil fuels or electricity to generate heat, heat pumps work by extracting heat from the air outside and transferring it inside to warm your space; simply moving existing heat from one place to another, making them a more sustainable, greener and cost-effective option. In fact, according to research conducted as part of the Electrification of Heat Demonstration Project, funded by the UK Government, heat pumps are up to 3 times more efficient compared to traditional systems.

Plus, by using renewable energy to heat and cool your space, you can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. This is important for the planet and can also be beneficial for your business or home’s reputation.

Versatile

Another benefit of heat pumps is their versatility. They can be used for both heating and cooling, making them a year-round solution. This means you don’t need to invest in separate heating and cooling systems, saving you money and space. Plus, the Snug Heat Pumps work brilliantly in a hybrid situation, supporting the output required for an additional underfloor heating system in an extension for example, when a boiler doesn’t have the extra capacity and therefore saving the homeowner from having to purchase a new larger boiler.

Increased Longevity

Heat pumps are also low maintenance. Snug Heat Pumps are housed in a robust anti-corrosive galvanized powder coated casing, designed for longevity, plus unlike traditional heating systems that require regular cleaning and upkeep, heat pumps are largely self-sufficient. We recommend an annual servicing to ensure they’re running efficiently, but otherwise, they require little attention.

Furthermore, heat pumps have a long lifespan. With proper maintenance and care, Snug Heat Pumps can last up to 20 years, which is significantly longer than traditional heating systems. This means you won’t need to replace your system as frequently, saving you money in the long run.

Working Together – Snug Heat Pumps & Snug Underfloor Heating

But now let’s turn our heads and talk about the benefits of using Snug Heat Pumps alongside Snug Underfloor Heating.

A Snug Underfloor Heating system involves installing pipes under your floor that circulate warm water to heat your space from the ground up. This provides a more even and consistent heat compared to traditional heating systems that rely on radiators. Additionally, because the heat is radiating from the ground up, over a larger surface area, it can run at lower temperatures, whilst achieving the desired level of warmth, further reducing your energy usage and bills.

Snug Heat Pumps are designed to work in harmony with Snug Underfloor Heating systems (as well as other underfloor heating systems), as both complementing systems work best at lower temperatures, making them the perfect combination for efficient, economical and effective heating.
